Judge Dredd wants to be both a legitimate violent action flick and a parody of one, but director Danny Cannon fails to find the necessary balance to make it work.
Shane O Great sets and visuals for the time , if you like total recall and demolition man this one is for you. The script wasn’t great but that didn’t matter it was held together by sly . ‘ I knew you would say that’ Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 03/05/25 Full Review alan g Comic book violence. Not the best special effects. Stallone one dimensional as usual. Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 02/22/25 Full Review Audience Member I love this movie and a Sylvester Stallone fan. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/06/25 Full Review jo r I think its a great movie. Mybe more teen oriented than it should have been. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 12/31/24 Full Review Jason T Good fun film that, like the comics, does not take itself too seriously. If you like Demolition Man or Total Recall, you will love this sci-fi. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 12/15/24 Full Review Matthew D Sly Stallone is the law as the persistent adjudicator Judge Dredd! Director Danny Cannon’s sci-fi action adventure Judge Dredd (1995) is super surprising to me. It’s full of brutal action and outrageous laughter. DREDD is a non-stop action thriller, whereas Judge Dredd wants to explore the ethics of a policeman that is judge, jury, and executioner in a dystopian future. Cannon says he loved the Judge Dredd comics and he was inspired by Ben Hur. You can see it with his massive scope and ambitious adventure. Judge Dredd is an entertaining mixture of Blade Runner, Robocop, Total Recall, Mad Max, and The Fifth Element. Writers Steven E. de Souza and William Wisher do a great job of giving Stallone cool one-liners, funny jokes, and a ruthless personality as he guns down bad guys endlessly. I could feel the heartfelt love for this character from Cannon’s direction and de Souza and Wisher’s script. I’m shocked people do not like this movie more as it’s so exciting and fun. The corruption of the Judge’s high council to how their politics affect the general rioting public. Casting director Jackie Burch cast a wonderful ensemble full of legendary actors and actresses. Sylvester Stallone is ultra cool as the icy hearted Judge Joseph Dredd. Stallone shouts his lines with a commanding boom. He really gives Dredd a personality and heart to show his dedication to the law. Stallone will have you screaming, “I AM THE LAW!” Armand Assante is raving mad as the furious villain Rico. Diane Lane is quite pretty and charming as the clever and righteous Judge Hershey, who likes Judge Dredd. Rob Schneider is pretty funny as the hacker criminal and comedy relief Fergee. It’s weird he worked with Sly Stallone, then another action hero Van Damme in Knock Off. Jürgen Prochnow is fantastic as the corrupt and misguided Judge Griffin, seeking power by any means necessary. Max von Sydow is amazing as the principled and decent man Chief Justice Fargo. Joanna Miles is stern and fierce as Judge McGruder. Joan Chen is gorgeous and compelling as Dr. Ilsa Hayden. She even gets into a cool fight with Diane Lane. Balthazar Getty is solid as the helpful Cadet Nathan Olmeyer. Mitchell Ryan’s ethical reporter Vartis Hammond is interesting in the beginning of Judge Dredd. Scott Wilson’s crazy cannibal Pa Angel is amusing. I was freaked out by Christopher Adamson’s hulking metallic man Mean Machine Angel. Ewen Bremner is hilarious to see as Junior Angel a year before he’s in Trainspotting. James Remar cameos as the Block Warlord. Adrienne Barbeau is actually the pleasant Central Computer voice actress! I loved James Earl Jones’ opening narration. Editors Harry Keramidas and Alex Mackie swiftly cut from scene to scene with a brisk pace that makes 96 minutes feel like 30 to me. Cinematographer Adrian Biddle goes for wild angles and far wide shots of the desert and cityscapes. I liked the close-up shots for all the conversations to get to the more emotional moments. Kevin Day’s lighting is stunning with moody shadows everywhere other than the illuminated faces in key lights. Production designer Nigel Phelps’ ruined Mega-City sets are outstanding. The props and furniture from Peter Young are cool like the giant Lady Justice statue. Special effects from Chris Cunningham are fabulous like the moving automaton and metallic limbs on Mean Machine Angel. The gooey clones look creepy. Joel Hynek’s visual effects for the gun blasts feel powerful. Composer Alan Silvestri’s lively score is enthusiastic and feels inspired by Basil Poledouris’ Robocop score. Emma Porteous’ Judge costumes are awesome. In short, Judge Dredd is a ferocious action movie and ambitious sci-fi adventure. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 11/22/24 Full Review Read all reviews

Synopsis In the crime-plagued future, the only thing standing between order and chaos is Judge Joseph Dredd (Sylvester Stallone). His duty: police the violent metropolitan sprawls that crowd the decaying earth, and kill criminals on the spot if necessary. The tables are turned, however, when maniacal ex-Judge Rico (Armand Assante) frames Dredd for murder. But, as his opponents soon discover, not even a prison sentence can stop Dredd from doling out his signature brand of justice.
