Critics Consensus

Narratively unwieldy and tonally jumbled, Maps to the Stars still has enough bite to satisfy David Cronenberg fans in need of a coolly acidic fix.

Jason Bailey Flavorwire So here's a mean, nasty little piece of work - and I have a feeling director David Cronenberg would take that as the compliment it's intended to be. Jun 18, 2016 Full Review Richard Roeper Chicago Sun-Times This isn't a lousy film; it's a mediocre, ugly film about lousy people. Rated: 2.0 Mar 5, 2015 Full Review J. R. Jones Chicago Reader Hollywood has been disemboweling itself since... Sunset Boulevard and The Bad and the Beautiful, but those movies seem like Cream of Wheat compared to Cronenberg's wicked vision. Mar 5, 2015 Full Review Bianca Garner Filmotomy Moore manages to capture this lost, lonely, and damaged individual without every being too heavy-handed in her approach. Oct 10, 2024 Full Review Bill Bria Vague Visages The vapid and self-obsessed showbiz characters of Maps to the Stars go beyond the usual Hollywood satire, as Cronenberg chronicles the various ways their self-delusions and ambitions create an ever larger abyss of lies... Jun 15, 2023 Full Review Vadim Rizov Filmmaker Magazine There’s something about anti-Hollywood satire that brings out the worst/most facile in otherwise great filmmakers. Audience Member I turned this off half way through. I like to think people actually aren’t that contemptible. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 09/29/24 Full Review David W Maps to the Stars is the kind of weird, quirky production that Cronenberg has grown into in the most recent part of his career. It's enjoyable and features more refined and subtle forms of the body horror that he is known for. I would definitely watch this again. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/24/24 Full Review Alec B Cronenberg's sensibilities improve upon what could easily have been more obvious satirical elements. Moore's performance is impressive, a lot of actor's have made themselves look physically ugly but few would be willing to go as far emotionally as she does here. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 12/13/23 Full Review Melissa B Horrible. Depressing movie Rated 1 out of 5 stars 06/03/23 Full Review Eithan D pretty good movie though somehow it doesn't elevated to really touching me. Cronenberg even if more subdued still looks at disturbing aspects of our lives but this movie falls short for me Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 03/24/23 Full Review colin m Confusing unenjoyable movie. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 03/30/23 Full Review Read all reviews
