Maudie's talented cast -- particularly Sally Hawkins in the title role -- breathe much-needed depth into a story that only skims the surface of a fascinating life and talent.

Paul Byrnes Sydney Morning Herald Both writer and director set out in search of a heroine. They're so intent on crafting a legend, they leave out the uncomfortable bits. They do her and us a disservice in that respect. Rated: 3/5 Aug 25, 2017 Full Review Bob Mondello NPR Maud's life was constricted, but her gaze was expansive. And so is her movie. Aug 17, 2017 Full Review Donald Clarke Irish Times Maudie is a sad film about poor people, but it could scarcely be more open to benevolence and quiet humanism. Rated: 4/5 Aug 7, 2017 Full Review Marya E. Gates Cool People Have Feelings, Too. (Substack) There's a lot harsh violence in their path towards mutual respect and love, though it somehow lands on an incredibly tender note. Feb 13, 2024 Full Review Michael Clark Epoch Times If your day isn’t going well because a barista got your coffee order wrong or you waited too long in line at the grocery store, step back, take stock, and thank your maker you weren’t tested like Ms. Lewis. You’d likely fold like a deck chair. Rated: 4.5/5 Jan 30, 2024 Full Review Keith Garlington Keith & the Movies It is a life-affirming movie that feels both tragic and beautiful. peter S Simply a work of art. Hawkins is stupendous. The directing is spot on. The photography is really good. The story is well laid out. Did I say how excellent Hawkins is ? Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/19/24 Full Review Georgan G A story of art, love & life. The true story of Maud Lewis isn't exactly what happened in the film, but the plot was touching. A most unconventional film. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 09/27/23 Full Review Rebekah S Impeccable performances and perfect pacing makes this moving story shine as radiantly as Maudie, the passionate painter who shows us what it is to master the art of relationship. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 07/22/23 Full Review dave s Maudie, based on the life of Canadian artist Maud Lewis, is a story of suffering, adversity, and the overcoming of seemingly insurmountable obstacles. Set in rural Nova Scotia, Maudie (Sally Hawkins) suffers from severe rheumatoid arthritis. Filled with self-doubt, she eventually marries a brutish fish monger (Ethan Hawke) who, after initially dismissing her talent as a painter, eventually provides his support. Thanks to the remarkable performances of the leads, some beautiful imagery, great set and costume design, and a touching script, Maudie is a poignant look at the human spirit and the art that arises from it. As coyly humorous as it is heartbreaking, it is an inspirational film that will evoke as many tears as it will sly smiles. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 03/30/23 Full Review Benjamin C I still remmber this performance ...quite simple Sally Hawkins achieves a close to pefection in a performance that I could imagine. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 11/27/22 Full Review tom e Unique, heartwarming while sadness always looms. Sally Hawkins was phenomenal in her role. Only afterward did I discover it was based on real people.
