High-brow humorists doing low-brow humor never hit their stride.
Joel H I remember seeing posters for Mickey Blue Eyes when it came out, but I didn’t really hear anything about the movie from others and it slowly faded into the past. It’s actually not a bad romantic comedy. I smirked, laughed, and gasped at times, and I generally enjoyed myself as I watched it. The plot is definitely contrived, but no more so than other rom-coms of the time. It’s no surprised that Hugh Grant plays the part of a bumbling, awkward Englishman well, and I actually liked seeing Burt Young in his role as a no-nonsense mobster. I may forget I saw Mickey Blue Eyes, but I liked it in the moment. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 04/23/24 Full Review Lily D Fun, light hearted, a few decent laughs. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 10/30/23 Full Review Audience Member It's a curiosity, and that's about it. Just a way to see Jimmy Cahn essentially reprise his Godfather role, but watered down considerably... and thrown in the guy from 4 Weddings & A Funeral. Just a weird combo, and it doesn't work. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 01/14/23 Full Review Audience Member There was so little romance in this movie that I don't believe it should be classified as such. The same holds true for the comedy label. If you enjoy watching others being put into unfortunate and cringe-worthy situations then you might enjoy this movie. I found the mafia stereotypes to be cliché and the behavior/dialogue of many of the characters unbelievable. Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 02/13/23 Full Review Audience Member Great movie to watch with your family and friends. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/04/23 Full Review Audience Member Thanks to the laugh-out-loud humour and feel-good story of "Mickey Blue Eyes", it will be a while before you "forged aboud id". Synopsis English art dealer Michael Felgate (Hugh Grant) is dumbfounded to learn that his girlfriend, Gina Vitale (Jeanne Tripplehorn), cannot accept his marriage proposal because her entire family is involved with the Mafia. Undeterred and in love, Michael meets Gina's father, mob boss Frank (James Caan), who immediately takes a shine to the young suitor. But before he can give his blessing, Frank has plans for Michael that may or may not end in wedding bells.
