Saturday Night Fever | Rotten Tomatoes

Boasting a smart, poignant story, a classic soundtrack, and a starmaking performance from John Travolta, Saturday Night Fever ranks among the finest dramas of the 1970s.
Scott Great to have seen it again. Saw it in 1977. Awesome. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 07/07/21 Full Review Insomniac X A beloved story of wild nights and teenage angst in a working class Brooklyn neighborhood. Reminiscent of "The Last Picture Show" in its depiction of the economic and cultural deterioration of a small community, the film does a sublime job of contrasting the melancholia and tragedy of its subject's everyday lives with the ecstatic release found on the dance floor. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 02/03/25 Full Review Knoe F An absolute classic! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 06/29/24 Full Review Joel H I kind of wish I wouldn't have watched Saturday Night Fever. It's a dated, melodramatic mess. Instead of story, they have strutting. Instead of character development, they have choreography. Instead of dialog, they have dancing. This movie is a joke, but the only funny thing about it is how seriously it takes itself. And there really isn’t anyone to root for. None of the characters are likeable. It’s also a lot more offensive than I anticipated. The soundtrack may be the only good thing that came out of Saturday Night Fever being made and now, after watching it, I like the songs a little bit less. Not really sure what the point of this film is but Travolta pulls some brilliant shapes on the dance floor. Bought on DVD. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 09/15/23 Full Review Read all reviews

Synopsis Tony Manero (John Travolta) doesn't have much going for him during the weekdays. He still lives at home and works as a paint store clerk in his Brooklyn, N.Y., neighborhood. But he lives for the weekends, when he and his friends go to the local disco and dance the night away. When a big dance competition is announced, he wrangles the beautiful and talented Stephanie (Karen Lynn Gorney) to be his partner. As the two train for the big night, they start to fall for each other as well.
