Critics Consensus

A life-affirming, if saccharine, epic treatment of a spirit-lifting figure in sports history.

Nell Minow Common Sense Media An inspiring story for teens and up. Rated: 4/5 Dec 28, 2010 Full Review Todd McCarthy Variety Respectable when it should be thrilling, honorable when it should be rough and ready. Jul 31, 2008 Full Review David Ansen Newsweek [It] may be too airbrushed for its own good, but in the end nothing can stop this story from putting a lump in your throat. Nov 1, 2007 Full Review Mike Massie Gone With The Twins The overlong runtime (loosely encompassing the benchmarks of the real-life symbol of hope) definitely doesn’t help in building toward a thrilling climax. Rated: 5/10 Feb 6, 2025 Full Review Danielle Solzman Solzy at the Movies Twenty years after its theatrical release, Seabiscuit remains one of the best sports dramas to grace the screen. Rated: 5/5 Jul 25, 2023 Full Review Cory Woodroof For the Win (USA Today) Seabiscuit remains the best movie ever made about the world of horse racing. May 19, 2023 Full Review Read all reviews

Jennifer Tehani S Holds up after so many years. One of my favorite films! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/14/25 Full Review Ryan M Although there were moments that dragged on, this is a beautiful story an an enjoyable sports flick. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 01/13/25 Full Review Marit Risto F Have wached it many times, and will do it again. With great gusto Rated 4 out of 5 stars 10/30/24 Full Review Karl N I absolutely loved this movie. Wonderful story, beautifully told. Excellent acting. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 10/29/24 Full Review Audience Member I’m not much of a sports enthusiast but this definitely had me glued to the screen wanting to know how the incredible story of this horse changed so much This is mostly too about the humanity surrounding this animal Long but a very good historical sports drama over 20 years later Rated 4 out of 5 stars 07/26/24 Full Review ThirdEchelon This is one of my favorite films. It's got a lot of meaning to it, other than just winning. It's about perseverance and will, not just excellence. The music is so inspirational and fitting to the cinematography. And who doesn't love watching one of the beautiful creatures on Earth... The horse. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 03/22/24 Full Review Read all reviews

Synopsis In the midst of the Great Depression, a businessman (Jeff Bridges) coping with the tragic death of his son, a jockey with a history of brutal injuries (Tobey Maguire) and a down-and-out horse trainer (Chris Cooper) team up to help Seabiscuit, a temperamental, undersized racehorse. At first the horse struggles to win, but eventually Seabiscuit becomes one of the most successful thoroughbreds of all time, and inspires a nation at a time when it needs it most.
