Critics Consensus

It may not be as fresh as the original, but topical humor and colorful secondary characters make Shrek 2 a winner in its own right.

Derek Malcolm London Evening Standard The animation by which it stands or falls is as brilliant as ever and, though it wouldn't really be right to call it totally anti-Disney, it certainly trumps that institution for sharpness of focus, notably as far as the screenplay is concerned. Dec 6, 2014 Full Review James Christopher Times (UK) All hail the angriest rebel since James Dean. All right, he's green, pot-bellied, and has the social graces of a slug. But in terms of attitude? Peerless. Dec 6, 2014 Full Review Miranda Sawyer New Statesman Go and see Shrek 2. You'll enjoy yourself thoroughly. Only the churlish could find any faults. Dec 6, 2014 Full Review Cory Woodroof For the Win (USA Today) The second Shrek film is nearly as good as the first, maintaining the relentless humor and upping the ante with the scale and emotional stakes. Sep 25, 2024 Full Review John Stephens Texas Triangle/TXT This really is a fun movie series, and hopefully we can expect more offerings to please both the kid in us as well as the cynical adult, both of whom will have no problem enjoying Shrek 2. Rated: B May 7, 2023 Full Review Carla Monfort Espinof ... As fun as the first and one of those films that's worth watching every so often because it always gets a smile out of you and the story works like a clock. Synopsis After returning from their honeymoon and showing home movies to their friends, Shrek and Fiona learn that her parents have heard that she has married her true love and wish to invite him to their kingdom, called Far Far Away. The catch is: Fiona's parents are unaware of the curse that struck their daughter and have assumed she married Prince Charming, not a 700-pound ogre with horrible hygiene and a talking donkey pal.
