Critics Consensus

Sleepaway Camp is a standard teen slasher elevated by occasional moments of John Waters-esque weirdness and a twisted ending.

Scott Tobias The Dissolve There are great films and then there are magical films, glorious oddities that pop up sui generis out of nowhere. Sleepaway Camp falls squarely into the latter category. Rated: 4/5 May 27, 2014 Full Review Nick Schager Lessons of Darkness Still the finest Sleepaway Camp, if only because of its memorable final shot. Rated: B Jul 21, 2005 Full Review Ed Gonzalez Slant Magazine Evokes a period in time before Ritalin and common sense. Rated: 2/4 Apr 20, 2005 Full Review Cody Leach Cody Leach (YouTube) If there ever was a beautiful disaster, it's Sleepaway Camp. Almost everything about the production is of poor quality; yet, there is an undeniable charm and hilarity to it's end result. The kills are creative and the ending will stick with you forever. Rated: 4/5 Aug 27, 2022 Full Review Trace Thurman Horror Queers Podcast While the film will forever be remembered for its shocker of an ending, there's still an interesting conversation going on about the effects of bullying and abuse on a child that allows the film to rise above some of its more shallow slasher peers. Rated: 3.5/5 Aug 17, 2022 Full Review Joe Lipsett Horror Queers Podcast The film has undergone a significant reappraisal in recent years - for many this is no longer a homophobic and transphobic text. Despite the creative team having zero intentions to that effect, Sleepaway Camp has been appropriated as a trans revenge film. Jul 28, 2022 Full Review Read all reviews

Omar G Sleepaway Camp (1983). At the beginning of the credits you can see the consequences of the ending with so many murders that they finally got the camp closed. The atmosphere at the camp is nicer than in the Friday The 13th part VI movie. Some like Ricky, Mozart have fun at the Camp, others are mean and deserve their punishments like Artie, Billy, Mel, Judy, Meg, Kenny, Paul. The good guys were Ronnie, Sussie, Gene, Jeff, Eddie and the lifeguard. It's the homophobic movie. The best characters are Ricky and his crazy mother Martha straight out of a sitcom, the crazy mother has nice physical features. Angela who is a man stares at Judy out of physical attraction. Angela/Peter is bisexual then she feels a crush on Paul the lascivious. It's a good movie, but Angel/Peter exaggerated almost at the end killing almost anyone who sees him as ugly. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 01/06/25 Full Review Darrell S The ending is definitely a WTF?! moment. Decent story telling through out. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 12/22/24 Full Review Ishmael C This movie is a classic. The ending will always be as one of the greatest twist in Horror movie history. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 11/07/24 Full Review Audience Member Quite the messed up horror film. It was clear who the killer was early on but I did not expect the twist that was revealed at the end. Fairly solid for an 80s slasher film. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 10/16/24 Full Review Lauren T The acting was horrific. The story line was interesting.. and you’ll never seen an ending like it. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 10/05/24 Full Review Michael H Maybe the best of the camp, death, fear horror films ever. Twiste ending is a shocker.
