The Fountain | Rotten Tomatoes

The Fountain -- a movie about metaphysics, universal patterns, Biblical symbolism, and boundless love spread across one thousand years -- is visually rich but suffers from its own unfocused ambitions.
Gordon M I tried hard to like this movie, I really did. The idea of a conquistador on a quest for the tree of life was deeply captivating, as well as the idea of immortality and the symbolism of all of these ideas is very compelling. But this promise is broken by the film. We do not get to see a quest by the conquistador. We see boring sentimental crying and misery that made me want to leave the theatre. Curious, I endured the pain, and regretted every moment. I see that others like this film. I considered it to be a broken promise just like all clickbait. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 02/02/25 Full Review Jacob B A film that's not interested in giving easy answers, The Fountain has its problems stemming from just how mind-screwy it can get but the strong performances, amazing score from Clint Mansell, exploration of thought-provoking themes such as coming to terms with one's own mortality and some incredible visuals make it an ambitious project that's worth checking out at least once. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 01/14/25 Full Review Reagan R The movies that take the biggest swings get the harshest criticism. Ignore the urge to find an exact meaning and clear thread in this movie. Just experience it, feel it. Death is inexplicable and this enigmatic movie captures its tragic, beautiful nature. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 12/01/24 Full Review Hadi J The Fountain is a cinematic poem, a haunting exploration of love, life, and eternity. Every frame feels like a work of art, with breathtaking visuals and masterful metaphors that make the film as much a journey of the soul as it is a story. Hugh Jackman and Rachel Weisz deliver unforgettable performances, their chemistry embodying a love that transcends time and space. Clint Mansell’s soul-wrenching score perfectly complements the movie’s visuals, capturing the deep sorrow and beauty at its core. For those open to a profound, meditative experience, The Fountain is a visual and emotional masterpiece. It's worth watching, but there were a lot of scenes that made me bored. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 11/09/24 Full Review Audience Member The most visually stunning film I have ever seen.
