Critics Consensus

Though somewhat overwhelmed by its own spectacle, The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies ends Peter Jackson's second Middle-earth trilogy on a reasonably satisfying note.

Stephen Romei The Australian While the action scenes are eye-popping, for me the film becomes something special in stiller moments, with the megalomaniac Thorin raving, questioning, justifying, swerving towards evil. Rated: 4.5/5 Jan 6, 2015 Full Review Jake Wilson Sydney Morning Herald This is comfortably straightforward hokum -- which is to say that Jackson, for all his delusions of grandeur, remains a bit of a hobbit at heart. Rated: 2.5/5 Jan 6, 2015 Full Review Leonard Maltin leonardmaltin.com With some of the most exciting hand-to-hand combat I've ever seen portrayed onscreen the final film in "The Hobbit" trilogy really delivers the goods. Dec 19, 2014 Full Review Don Shanahan Every Movie Has a Lesson Even if you think the movie studio was milking you for three movie tickets over three years out of a book that probably could have fit into a single film, you now get to see your patience rewarded and your virtue justified. Rated: 4/5 Oct 17, 2024 Full Review Keith Garlington Keith & the Movies It’s a tighter and more focused movie and runs 20 minutes shorter than either of the first two Hobbit films. More importantly it feels in tune with the previous movies and offers us an exciting and fitting conclusion filled with great action and emotion. Rated: 4/5 Aug 21, 2022 Full Review Brian Eggert Deep Focus Review Beyond letting audiences down with the final entry of six, Jackson doesn't meet his own high standards and treatment for the Middle Earth saga up to this point. If only it had been part of the Guilermo Del Toro duology. Ah well. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 02/21/25 Full Review Turner M It's pretty solid but it's not as good as Desolation but better than An Unexpected Journey. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 02/11/25 Full Review Audience Member WORST MOVIE EVER MADE, KILI DIED NO POINT WATCHING IT Rated 1 out of 5 stars 02/07/25 Full Review matthias s **The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies** feels like a visual banquet served with a side of disappointment. As a die-hard fan of Middle-earth, I adored seeing familiar faces—Ian McKellen as Gandalf is pure magic, and Martin Freeman brings so much charm as Bilbo. The landscapes are breathtaking, the soundtrack hits all the right notes, and Peter Jackson’s direction is undeniably spot-on for this world. But… why does Smaug’s fiery reign end in the first five minutes? Talk about anticlimactic. Then there’s the battle, which drags on forever with mediocre CGI that pales in comparison to *The Lord of the Rings*. The playful, whimsical tone of the book is swapped for an overly serious vibe, which feels out of place. It’s not terrible—just the weakest of the saga. Visually stunning? Yes. Memorable? Not so much. A decent watch, but I wish they’d done it justice. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 01/09/25 Full Review Read all reviews
