Critics Consensus

Audaciously gross, wickedly clever, and possibly Demi Moore's finest hour, The Substance is a gasp-inducing feat from writer-director Coralie Fargeat.

Rachel Syme The New Yorker For my money, one of the best things you can do this season is to run to see the French director Coralie Fargeat’s The Substance while it is still playing on the big screen. Oct 8, 2024 Full Review Tim Cogshell FilmWeek (KPCC - NPR Los Angeles) Extraordinary... This is daring and stylish. Oct 8, 2024 Full Review Jorge Ignacio Castillo The Canadian Crew For all the things The Substance does right,...the film is so detached viewers may have a hard time getting emotionally invested. It’s more like watching an alien nature documentary about the lengths humans would go to remain forever young. Butler Butler's Cinema Scene For its first hour, at least, The Substance is riveting stuff, a mashup of social commentary, a vicious satire of showbiz duplicity, an angry examination of feminine angst and a staggering truckload of Cronenberg-level body horror. Britania L The movie was too long. It should be cut down by 30 minutes. The plot was lost at times and there were throwaway scenes. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 02/10/25 Full Review Marc Worst movie Ive seen this year! Story was simple, and poorly told. Last Show Girl was a similar theme, but much better movie! Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 02/09/25 Full Review Matthew M This is my 2nd time seeing it - the first was on opening weekend, where I was blown away by the visuals, sickened by the sound effects, and pleased with the performances and overall entertaining story. This time, I wanted to see if I had missed something in Moore's performance the first go round. I knew she was good, but was she THAT good? My opinion hasn't changed. Demi's very good performance is, in my opinion, not Oscar worthy, but is being pushed for other Hollywood reasons. I enjoyed the film as much the second go round. 2 hours and 20 minutes flies by. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/09/25 Full Review Jason W To preface, I have struggled to enjoy sci-fi as a genre, with only a couple of films that resonated with me. That said, I was blown away by this and loved the questions it posed regarding the perception of beauty, stardom, celebrity, and how society shapes those things. The acting is great, I really enjoyed the directing and noticed several homages throughout. The camera work and audio both added quite a bit to the feel of the movie. However, as many other reviews have mentioned, the last 30 minutes or so I did not enjoy. One review that it helped me see this ending in a different light mentioned that it is the director’s attempt to make the audience uncomfortable with the impact we have in perpetuating beauty and celebrity stereotypes. In retrospect, I do believe that is what the director intended, I just feel it was heavy handed and could have been done with more subtlety. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 02/04/25 Full Review Ryan H Almost threw up in the theater. Had to close my eyes for a 5 minute stretch. Unreal movie. Go see it. Wont watch again. But super fire. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/04/25 Full Review Mary Interesting movie about the lengths people will go to for beauty and to exploit it. Demi Moore deserves her nomination! But the gore toward the end was over the top disgusting! Do not take anyone under 18 to see this. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 02/02/25 Full Review Read all reviews
