Critics Consensus

Tightly scripted, solidly acted, and impressively ambitious, X2: X-Men United is bigger and better than its predecessor -- and a benchmark for comic sequels in general.

Alonso Duralde The Advocate X2 is pretty much all that you’d ever want out of a comic book movie -- it’s smart, it’s breathlessly paced, the characters have at least 2 1/2 dimensions, and the action sequences are jaw-droppers, even on the small screen. Apr 5, 2022 Full Review Alexander Walker London Evening Standard The truth is, the film is never again as good as its brilliant opening sequence. Jan 10, 2018 Full Review Barbara Ellen Times (UK) X-Men 2 remains a decent enough sci-fi effort, which delivers on most of the levels fans could expect. Too bad it's hampered by a plot that wouldn't get green-lit for an average episode of Buffy. Jan 3, 2018 Full Review Cory Woodroof For the Win (USA Today) The greatest X-Men film we’ve ever gotten remains X2, an absolutely spectacular reminder of how well these characters translate to film when they’re given the right vehicle. Jul 22, 2024 Full Review Sean Axmaker Stream on Demand At 135 minutes it never feels long, thanks to a driving pace, rapid crosscutting between parallel stories, and spectacular action scenes that never forget about the characters at the center. May 4, 2024 Full Review Brian Eggert Deep Focus Review Inspiring hope for equality and further suggesting that governments are at the mercy of the populace, the franchise actionizes these themes to gratify both the mind and senses as few comic book movies have ever done to this point. Adrian T X2 es un grana avance desde la primera. Hay mejores efectos especiales, las escenas de combate son más fluidas y realistas. Siguen siendo los actores quienes se llevaban todo por delante! En esta entrega me siento más cercano a los personajes. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/19/25 Full Review Brian M just like Empire Strikes Back, the 2nd film in the original trilogy is rated as the best. 9/10 Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 02/11/25 Full Review Riccardo D Great sequel that expands Wolverine's background and as well as that of side characters. Some cool new additions to the teams and the first they the two parts are seen collaborating for a common goal. McKellen (in particular) and Stewart as usual carry the most depth. Really interesting also the brief insight into Magneto's past. Glimpses of what's to come prepare the viewer for the third chapter. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 01/30/25 Full Review Rick C X2 ups the ante by forcing the heroes and villains into a precarious truce against a greater evil that threatens them both. Although this accomplished a more interesting narrative overall, my criticisms of the first movie still apply. I also have questions about certain plot points in the third act that don't make sense to me. What is the extent of Storm's ability to control the weather, and when the dam burst why couldn't she stop what was essentially a tsunami? She can very clearly manipulate precipitation/water so if there's a caveat to her ability then it isn't explained very well in the movie. Why did Jean Grey have to leave the jet to use her telekinesis? Wolverine asks this exact question at the end of the movie and it is chalked up to something about her having to make a choice. Overall, unlike other superhero movies of the time period which focus on one hero and an accompanying villain (e.g. Spider-Man and Green Goblin), the X-Men movies are more ambitious; but with so many characters and superpowers to keep track of I feel the narrative gets progressively messier with inconsistencies. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 01/14/25 Full Review Samuel W The second installment focuses primarily on action and the powers of others, while delving into some potentially climactic threads of the story. While the story and the characters make questionable turns, it still makes for an enjoyable story as Stryker causes a true divide between humankind and mutantkind. The set-up and the visuals of the story, alongside the quips and the characters’ fun dynamics makes this an acceptable entry of the original X-Men trilogy.
