Critics Consensus

Maid takes great care with its sensitive subject matter to craft a drama that is not always easy to watch, but undeniably powerful, grounded by an outstanding performance by Margaret Qualley.

Kelly Lawler USA Today The drama offers a blistering portrayal of the realities of poverty as seen through the eyes of Alex... Dec 29, 2021 Full Review Wenlei Ma News.com.au Maid deals with the hardship of female poverty with a straight approach, and always centred through the experiences of this sympathetic character that you want to root for. Nov 2, 2021 Full Review Elizabeth Skoski Slate At a time when women's discontent has gone from "the problem that has no name" to a primal scream, Maid fails to show a place in between, one where mothers are given a voice without having to be perfect. Oct 30, 2021 Full Review Isobel Nutbrown Loud and Clear Reviews Less than two months after its release, Maid has brought audiences across the world to their knees. Gritty, raw, almost painful in places, this Netflix series more than lives up to the hype. Rated: 4.5/5 Jan 18, 2025 Full Review Alexandra MacAaron Women's Voices for Change It takes the average woman 7 attempts to leave her abusive partner. And nearly 25% of single mothers live in poverty. Maid shines a light on a real problem, and the thoroughly broken system trying to solve it. It should be required watching for all of us. Rated: 9/10 Aug 25, 2022 Full Review Natalia Trzenko La Nación (Argentina) The story's greatest emotional impact is provided by Qualley's remarkable performance. Alex C One of the saddest things I've watched in a while. While I cannot relate to the mother part, I know that me and many of my friends have been in relationships with men similar to Sean. It's a constant gaslighting against yourself on how maybe they've changed, but the chances are severely slim. The pain of the men consistently being so unreliable and realizing she's reliving the cycle of trauma that she's gone through since childhood. Overall, it's another great reason why to stay child-free as a young woman with extremely limited resources. Guys like Sean love to hold over women's heads that they "make all the money" when they beg for the woman to be a stay at home mom. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/04/25 Full Review Audience Member Shows the realistic struggles of DV, The overcoming of generational trauma and abusive, and overcoming the odds Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/02/25 Full Review Naveen K It is a great story line. It is amazing acting by the female star cast..... Every minute of this is worth watch. what a direction...... Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/13/25 Full Review Ralph R Maid is a solid, heartfelt drama that offers an honest look at resilience and survival, though it doesn’t always hit the mark. Created by Molly Smith Metzler, the series follows Alex, portrayed by Margaret Qualley, whose performance brings vulnerability and strength to the character, making her journey relatable and engaging. The direction and production are thoughtfully executed, with a careful attention to detail that adds depth, but the series occasionally falters with its lengthy episodes, leading the pacing to feel stretched. While Maid doesn’t reach the level of a truly standout series, it’s a well-crafted, empathetic story that resonates, making it worth the watch for fans of character-driven drama.
