Critics Consensus

While Squid Game's return can't help but lose the element of surprise, some absolutely diabolical challenges and a knotty moral outlook keep this sophomore season thrilling.

Dan Einav Financial Times Hwang keeps these disparate moods finely balanced throughout, knowing when to revel in lurid thrills and when to reveal more of the ideas underpinning it all. Jan 16, 2025 Full Review Lili Loofbourow Washington Post Instead of building, Jun-ho’s plot languishes. Gi-hun’s arc gets blurry. Worst of all, the antagonist remains a cipher. Jan 9, 2025 Full Review Robert Lloyd Los Angeles Times Though I am not going to rewatch the first season for comparison, because life is short, my impression is that the new season has more of an emphasis on interpersonal relationships (good and bad) and team dynamics. Jan 4, 2025 Full Review Joe Lipsett Horror Queers Podcast The boat subplot aside, S02 is nearly as good as the first. Gi-hun's morals slipping under In-ho's influence is compelling and the new games, particularly the Pentathlon, are incredibly exciting. Bonus points for Gong Yoo's villainous turn Jan 31, 2025 Full Review Robert W. Butler Butler's Cinema Scene This time around, though, something’s off. The characters are painfully one-dimensional, less real people than symbols. Jan 26, 2025 Full Review Christian Gallichio The Playlist “Squid Game” has gone the way of the Hollywood blockbuster. A little louder, a little less interesting, but also fundamentally entertaining, even if it sometimes feels like leftovers. Rated: B Jan 24, 2025 Full Review Read all reviews

Brian K Disappointing ending. Not as bad as Lost but similar to Game of Thrones in a WTF ending that resolves nothing. Makes you wonder if just watching the first of something, is always best. Something so spectacular and strong as the first season, you're bound to lose trying it again. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 03/05/25 Full Review Paulo S It was not as good as the first season, but it was still wildly entertaining to watch. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 03/04/25 Full Review Brendan J Incomplete, but not in an intriguing way. Just a waste of time.. if anything, wait until it's over and watch it all at once. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 03/03/25 Full Review Daniel O The takes for this game were high but squid game did not disappoint. Loved it, and can't wait for the second season to be released already. I think its fair to say the first season of Squid Game was an instant cult classic. I didn't know what to expect of the second one, but I can imagine the level of pressure the team behind it had to live up to the expectations. They did so, and beyond. The first season was a novel concept, suspenseful, original and very captivating. They touched on the deep flaws in human behaviour, but it felt a bit superficial and unexplored. The second season went deep. There's real character development, the layers of our flaws are being peeled, and it's turning from pure entertainment to reflection. The fact that there are a few micro storylines in parallel is critical, and I honestly just can't wait for the next one. **Spoilers below** Some of my favorite moments and themes: 1. Seong's transformation from the first to the second season is real. The moment where he went back to his "old ways" with his friend felt very humbling and a reminder of how our experiences shape our lives. 2. Hwang's suicide during the russian roulette game was a masterpiece of a scene. Nothing to add. 3. Thanos's character was very fun, refreshing and necessary. 4. As someone who was in crypto, the "coin" sub-plot is VERY accurate and doesn't feel fake. It's how we all really feel in the industry. 5. The ship captain being a man on the inside is mind-blowing. 6. The fact that the organizer of everything was one of my favorite plot twists. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 03/02/25 Full Review Seth E Absolutely awful, don't watch it. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 03/01/25 Full Review Renaldy M Season 2 for this series is completely disastrous. Abandon its core of this series premise which is the main character motive to survive in the game is for his daughter's sake. Complete the game 'til the end so that the main character can meet again to his daughter and got the right for his daughter. Added to that this season they're trying so hard to adopt some of other series or movie to make this season look cooler and awesome, but turned out it's horrendous. If there is 0 score, surely I will pick 0 score. Thank you. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 03/01/25 Full Review Read all reviews
