Critics Consensus

Anchored by an impressive voice cast led by a solid Lakeith Stanfield, Yasuke's expertly crafted, gorgeously animated blend of fantasy and history is an epic ode to the titular samurai.

Valerie Complex io9.com A decent first attempt at continuing the legacy of a historical figure that is too often forgotten. Rated: C May 4, 2021 Full Review Tyler Hersko indieWire If you've seen any recent Marvel or "Star Wars" title, or practically any other mainstream action film in the last decade, you get the idea. It's a shame, because there are glimmers of potential that suggest "Yasuke" could be so much more. Rated: C+ May 4, 2021 Full Review Nick Schager The Daily Beast Mind-meltingly awesome... May 1, 2021 Full Review Mariló Delgado Espinof Yasuke gets points for daring to cross genres, here we see a feudal Japan filled with fantastical creatures and advanced technology sci-fi. A Geek Community Yasuke beautifully blends the legend of the first black Samurai with fantasy elements, topped off with a soulful performance from LaKeith Stanfield and stunning animation sequences. Mr. B One of the biggest wastes of a budget and a story I have ever seen. Incompetence and short-cutting corners leads what could've been an anime epic about a legendary samurai into a jarring mismatch of the most watered-down paint by numbers story you could ever imagine and the overpopulation of too many ideas and no idea what to do with them. Combine this absolute inability to make an interesting story about a preexisting and already interesting story with some of the worst dialog and plot writing that has existed in the modern era and you have Yasuke. This show literally manages to writes itself into a corner within 3 episodes (circling around leaving the village) and outright lies to itself, its' characters, and its' audience multiple times to try and poorly get out of it. Parts of the animation are pretty good, parts of the performances aren't entirely terrible. Save yourself the time and skip this disgrace to a legend. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 01/19/25 Full Review Julian F I came in with pretty high expectation, then it all went downhill from there. The characters are generic and flat, the writing is inconsistent and it feels like the overall vision was thrown across the table multiple times. The story key moments are highly predictable and it was just all... not interesting. The pretty art did not help. Yasuke could literally be replaced by any generic protagonist and it would have all been the same. It starts out pretty decently with beats that keeps you at your seat, but the show quickly dwindles down into generic slop of boring tropes and got even worse with the nonsensical final arc. I don't recommend wasting your time watching this. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 05/15/24 Full Review Peter B It was honestly so bad. I was really excited. Literally lost my appetite. Why are there robots, and magic? Get a grip. Yasuke's story was already entertaining enough without the mf robots. Honestly it was so dumb bc Yasuke was like a side side side character in a show about robot battles. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 12/17/23 Full Review Christopher P I was super excited for this show and they went with some future, magic bullshit. Very disappointing Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 12/03/23 Full Review Kristin A Absolutely awful and boring, then they went completely left field and decided to add insult to a real life story with the direction they took adding giant robots in feudal Japan. Also the Animation is terrible - I'm honestly not sure what's up with the quality of Netflix's anime/animation but it's not smooth. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 04/23/23 Full Review Watton D If I could give 0 stars, this series earned it. Nice looking animation (besides the cgi robots), good voice acting, and thats all of the goods. This is one of the worst thought out, created, and excecuted animes to ever exist and it should be a crime. This is an insult to the actual story of Yasuke for a generic boring story thats not even well put together, this was a storyboard hodgepodge of ideas with more time to think than to create and it shows. Not a single note of substance in the entire anime it quickly brushes over going from point A to point B hoping you forgot how they got there or anyones actual motivations or feelings from the last episode.
