KURUKURU

The Solomon Islands National Futsal Team is probably the most loved national football team in Solomon Islands. Dominated by young players mostly in their teens, they have been able to capture the admiration and respect of spectators and players both locally and internationally.

Their biggest achievement remains being the first Pacific island country to qualify for the FIFA Futsal World Cup which they took part in 2008. While the results underline that some distance needs to be covered against the bigger names in the game their effort made Futsal rise to the fore in Solomon Islands as top sport beside the traditional 11-a-side code.

Key players in the team include Elliot Ragomo, Jack Wetney and Micah Lea’alafa. These trio have been the cornerstone of the team’s success dominating the Kurukuru score sheet as well as attracting the attention of spectators when they play. Nevertheless, the team has been undergoing development recently with some new players rising in to take the place of the warhorses who brought the team this far. New faces in 2010 include Coleman Makau, George Stevenson, David Lafai and Jeffery Bule.

Kurukuru won the OFC 2011 championship which served as the qualifiers for the 2012 FIFA Futsal World Cup.  At the 2012 FIFA Futsal World Cup in Thailand, the Kurukuru once again finished last in their group, suffering heavy defeats to Russia and Colombia, but did manage to obtain their first World Cup win, beating Guatemala 4–3.

Back on the regional stage, Kurukuru defended their OFC title at the 2015 OFC Championship in Suva to qualify for the FIFA Futsal World Cup Colombia 2016 where they exit at the group stage.

The team also participated at the 2017 Asian Indoor Games where they won two and lost two games.

Inspiration captain, Elliot Ragomo, has sacrificed his studies and an opportunity to play futsal overseas just to see this dream come true for his team.
