Savage Garden

  • ️Mon Dec 11 2000

As far as first concerts go, I truly believe I’m able to trump most people when I’m able to say I saw Savage Garden on their “Affirmation” tour. If you disagree, you clearly haven’t seen them. And if you have, then I’m sorry that the head trauma you must have experienced has clouded your better judgement. I’ll get you some water.

Cutting straight in to opening with “The Best Thing” gets everyone off their feet at the Nottingham Trent Arena with people bounding around as far as you can see. This then slows into a groove as they immediately go right into “Break Me, Shake Me”. But it’s the pause after this song. The pause that starts to build into a pumping synth and electronic noises as you try to stop your anticipation getting the better of you as a spot lit Daniel Jones drills out the opening to “To The Moon and Back” and the lights raise for the rest of the opening to then centre on Darren Hayes as he carries you through the rest of the night with a simply faultless performance.

Even the changes between Jone’s various guitars and Hayes’ outfits are immaculate. How does anyone change that quickly? It’s either that or the performances of “The Animal Song”, “Santa Monica” and the timeless “Truly, Madly, Deeply” left me so delightfully shell-shocked that I didn’t even notice.

Don’t even get me started about the double encore. I’m already hyperventilating just thinking about it again.
