Michael Nyman
- ️Fri Nov 23 2018
Michael Nyman is perhaps one of the most widely recognised avant garde composers to come out of Britain. He is known as one of the key exponents of the minimalist musical aesthetic in the UK and Europe, drawing influence from American ‘major minimalist’ composers of the 1960s including La Monte Young, Steve Reich, Terry Riley and Philip Glass.
He’s best known work could be his film scores and oddball operas. He has been a frequent collaborator with British director Peter Greenaway, having composed the soundtracks for The Draughtsman's Contract, The Cook, the Thief, His Wife & Her Lover, A Zed & Two Noughts, Drowning by Numbers and Prospero's Books.
He has penned many operas, including The Man Who Mistook His Wife for a Hat, Letters, Facing Goya, Man and Boy: Dada, Love Counts, and Sparkie: Cage and Beyond. He performs often with his Michael Nyman Band, for whom he has written many concerti, string quartets and chamber works.
Watching him live is to witness an esteemed career in overview. His versatility and body of work is impressive and he truly is a modern day maestro.
