‘PIER 66’ GETS REPRIEVE

  • ️Tue May 21 1996

Pier 66 will make it onto ABC after all, but it will be a one-night stand. The pilot for the show that prolific producer Aaron Spelling once dubbed “Melrose Place in Fort Lauderdale” will air at 10 p.m. Saturday on WPLG-Ch. 10 and WPBF-Ch. 25.

The single exposure of the drama, shot entirely in Broward County more than a year ago, is not an audition for series placement. It is a case of ABC trying to recoup what it can from its investment in the show. The original pilot was 90 minutes, Spelling said. The version this weekend will play for only an hour.

Pier 66 was a candidate for this past season’s ABC schedule, which it did not make. Spelling tried, without success, to shop it to other networks. The cast is made up of newcomers whose names will not be familiar to prime-time viewers.
