Synopsis
When an elderly woman is viciously murdered in Oxford, her body is discovered by two strangers whose lives are immediately changed forever: Arthur Seldom (John Hurt), a prestigious professor of logic, and Martin (Elijah Wood), a young graduate student who has just arrived at the university hoping to be Seldom's pupil. It quickly becomes clear that hers is the first in a series of increasingly bizarre murders, with each victim's corpse marked by strange symbols. Professor and student join forces to try and crack the code, setting into motion an elaborate game with the killer with ever-increasing stakes. As Martin gets closer to the facts, he grows increasingly unhinged from his grasp on the world around him.

DVD and Blu-ray Releases for October 5th, 2010
October 5th, 2010
One of the busiest weeks on the DVD / Blu-ray release report; in fact, I set a record for most reviews in a single week. With so much competition, one might think it would be tough picking the Pick of the Week, but that was not the case, as Beauty and the Beast - Blu-ray / DVD Combo walked away with that distinction. The only other release that really came close to it was Phineas and Ferb: A Very Perry Christmas, while there are about a dozen or so other releases worth picking up on this week's list.

Featured Blu-ray / DVD Review: The Oxford Murders
October 2nd, 2010
The Oxford Murders is a Spanish / French co-production shot in the U.K. with an American as one of the two main leads. A very international affair. It was made in 2008, but didn't find a distributor here till 2010, when it was released first on Video on Demand and then theatrically. Needless to say, like so many films before it that were debuted VoD, its theatrical release was short. But now that it is coming out on DVD / Blu-ray, will it find a more receptive audience?

Doing Time on the Per Theater Chart
August 10th, 2010
Leading the way on the per theater chart this weekend was Cairo Time with a healthy average of $13,249 in five theaters. The only other film to top $10,000 on the per theater chart was Avatar. Yes, that Avatar. It played in just one theater over the weekend and earned $10,511.

The Disappearance of Limited Releases
August 6th, 2010
There are a lot of films on this week's column, but ironically, it feels like there are not that many true limited releases. Of the eight films below, more than half are opening in a dozen or more theaters. Two of them are opening in more than 200 theaters, which is generally far too many for a limited release. Even more troubling, only half are earning overall positive reviews on Rotten Tomatoes, which could be devastating at the box office.
