Our DVD and Blu-ray sales estimates are based on weekly retail surveys, which we use to build a weekly market share estimate for each title we are tracking. The market share is converted into a weekly sales estimate based on industry reports on the overall size of the market, including reports published in Media Play News.
For example, if our weekly retail survey estimates that a particular title sold 1% of all units that week, and the industry reports sales of 1,500,000 units in total, we will estimate 15,000 units were sold of that title. The consumer spending estimate is based on the average sales price for the title in the retailers we survey.
We refine our estimates from week to week as more data becomes available. In particular, we adjust weekly sales figures for the quarter once the total market estimates are published by the Digital Entertainment Group. Figures will therefore fluctuate each week, and totals for individual titles can go up or down as we update our estimates.
Because sales figures are estimated based on sampling, they will be more accurate for higher-selling titles.

September 30th, 2022
After a $19-million opening for The Woman King two weeks ago, and a $19.4-million debut for Don’t Worry, Darling last weekend, Smile is hoping to become the first film of the Fall Season to crack $20 million on opening weekend. Its chances are good, based on its Thursday previews, but it’s far from certain to hit the mark.

Weekend predictions: will Don't Worry, Darling’s strong previews translate into a great opening weekend?
September 23rd, 2022
After a months-long (social) media frenzy, Don’t Worry, Darling finally hits theaters this weekend, and Warner Bros. and theater owners had enough confidence in the film to book it in 4,113 movie houses, the widest opening since Bullet Train at the beginning of August. Now, Don’t Worry, Darling is off to a promising start itself, with $3.1 million in previews, which includes special event IMAX screenings on Monday. Will that translate into a big opening weekend? Here’s what our model thinks…

Weekend predictions: The Woman King kicks off Fall Season with a $20-million opening in its sights
September 16th, 2022
After a long end-of-Summer lull, The Woman King is kicking off the Fall Season in movie theaters this weekend, and Sony will be hoping that it becomes the first film to hit $50 million at the box office since Bullet Train, which was released by the same studio all the way back on August 5. Woman King doesn’t look like it will be challenged at the top of the chart, but an incredible nine new releases have some sort of shot at opening in the top ten.

Weekend predictions: Smile is third film in three weeks to take a crack at a $20-million opening
September 30th, 2022

September 16th, 2022

Woman King doesn’t look like it will be challenged at the top of the chart, but an incredible nine new releases have some sort of shot at opening in the top ten.
