The future looks bright for 12 Years a Slave, Steve McQueen's acclaimed account of American slavery, as the film lead the field at nominations for the 20th Screen Actors Guild awards. McQueen's drama picked up four nominations, including the crowning prize for ensemble cast. Lee Daniels' The Butler, Jean-Marc Vallee's Dallas Buyers Club and John Wells's adaptation of Tracy Letts's August: Osage County bagged three nominations apiece.

In addition to being shortlisted for the cast, 12 Years a Slave gained a best actor nomination for Chiwetel Ejiofor's portrayal of Solomon Northup, sold into bondage in the American south. Lupita Nyong'o was shortlisted for the best supporting actress prize for her turn as an abused slave, while Michael Fassbender joined the best supporting actor race as a tyrannical plantation owner.

The SAG awards are widely seen as a crucial indicator of Oscar success. Last year's prize for ensemble cast went to the Ben Affleck thriller Argo, which went on to claim the best film Oscar. Daniel Day Lewis won the best actor prize for Lincoln, while Jennifer Lawrence claimed the best actress award for Silver Linings Playbook. Both would eventually replicate this success at the Academy Awards.

The 20th SAG awards are announced on January 18.
