A goal from Alexis Sánchez after 64 minutes earned Chile a 1-1 draw against Uruguay on Friday in their Copa América group match after Alvaro Pereira had given Uruguay the lead 10 minutes after half-time.
The draw means Chile have four points from two matches and top Group C while Uruguay, who reached the World Cup semi-finals a year ago, are on two points and in third place.
Uruguay had a couple of chances in an even first-half, the best being a Diego Forlán header that was stopped on the line. Chile had a few close long shots, including a spectacular one from Mauricio Isla late in the half which hit the bar.
Uruguay took the lead when the Liverpool striker Luis Suárez dribbled away from a number of defenders on the left side before his perfect pass found Pereira in front of the net. The Porto player took his time and slotted the ball past goalkeeper Claudio Bravo.
Suárez almost made it two to Uruguay midway through the second half, but Bravo batted away his low shot. However Chile were the better side from then on and equalized when Sánchez slotted home from inside the box.
Chile's Luis Jiménez almost scored the winner with a header thirteen minutes from time, but the Uruguay goalkeeper Fernando Muslera pulled off a fine save. Isla pressed Muslera into another save five minutes later with Chile dominating the game but unable to find the winner.
