More than a year after Activision Blizzard officially acquired Candy Crush creator King for $5.9 billion, the Swedish developer has revealed that it’s creating a new mobile game based on Call of Duty. The game appears to be very early in development, and will be handled by a new team within King’s Stockholm studio. There are currently no details on when the new Call of Duty game will be released.
“Our challenge as a team is to create a Call of Duty experience on mobile that will strive to transform the best console experience fans know and love, while also breaking new ground for mobile and redefining the genre,” King explains on its site. “Our approach and ambition is to be fresh, social, and highly accessible, while providing a very authentic game experience. The team will prototype extensively, have the freedom to think outside the box, and be encouraged to stretch their expertise in ways to create surprising results.”
Since being acquired by Activision, King has largely remained in the casual mobile space, releasing follow-ups to massively popular puzzle games like Bubble Witch Saga and Candy Crush Saga. The new Call of Duty will be the first time King tackles an established Activision property, but likely won’t be the last.
Last February, when the acquisition was completed, King CEO Riccardo Zacconi said the developer would “explore new ways to serve our players and build on the greatest franchises in interactive entertainment.” In addition to Call of Duty, Activision is also behind some of the biggest names in the industry, including Destiny, World of Warcraft, and Skylanders.
