Camp Davis

Camp Davis, four miles from the junction of White Oak Creek and the Pedernales River in Gillespie County, was established in March 1862 by James M. Norris as a ranger station for the Frontier Regiment. It was one of the eighteen Frontier Regiment posts set up in Central Texas along a generally north-south axis placed a day's ride apart, from the Red River to Rio Grande Station (formerly Fort Duncan) on the Rio Grande. The camp, manned by members of Henry T. Davis's Company of Mounted Volunteers, Texas State Troops, sent men on scout duty, the camp being named for the company commander. Capt. H. T. Davis's Company F was organized in Hays County on March 4, 1862, with 136 men tasked with maintaining Camp Llano in Mason County and Camp Davis as a deterrent against American Indian aggression. These men usually had to supply their own guns, mounts, and sustenance. Davis’s Company was mustered out on February 7, 1863. Camp Davis was probably used until the consolidation of the regiment in March 1864, when the regiment was mustered into regular Confederate service.
