The University of Michigan Women's Glee Club

Upcoming: Winter Concert

Sunday, April 6

Hill Auditorium

The University of Michigan Women’s Glee Club is a choral ensemble representing undergraduate and graduate SSAA singers from diverse fields across the U of M campus. Composed primarily of non-music majors, WGC gives SSAA singers the opportunity to express their love of music through performance, community outreach, and travel.

As a club, WGC allows students to meet a wide variety of friends who share a common interest in music. Founded in 1893, the Women’s Glee Club has a long history of enriching the university community and the lives of our hundreds of alumnae. As we look to the past for inspiration, the members of the Women’s Glee Club focus on the future and strive to become an enduring tradition at the University of Michigan.

The primary mission of the Women’s Glee Club has remained consistent throughout its long history—to provide an opportunity for women at the University of Michigan to keep music in their lives regardless of their academic backgrounds. The club has taken many shapes and forms over the years, but our hundreds of fond alumnae can attest to the success of this philosophy. From the beginning, excellence in performance and community outreach have been the vehicles for our accomplishments.

Women’s Glee Club plans both domestic and international tours for singers to experience! Their most recent international trip was the summer 2018 Italy tour, where they spent their time performing in various venues in Florence, Rome, and Venice. WGC also had the privilege of being able to perform during Holy Mass at St. Peter’s Basilica in the Vatican.

For over 125 years, Women’s Glee has been providing a community for women on the University of Michigan’s campus, but that community only expands after graduation. With over 700 active alumni, alumni relations is vital in maintaining our community. Our Vice President and Alumni relations chair are building community through communication, performance opportunities, and a biannual newsletter, the Arioso.

In 2006, a vocal jazz octet (later to be named “Midnight Blue”) was formed in the University of Michigan Women’s Glee Club. The octet’s repertoire covered a wide range, including pop, doo-wop, hip-hop, be-bop, and side-splitting parodies. Since joining the Michigan A Cappella Council in 2010, Midnight Blue has earned a stellar reputation as the funniest, most beautiful, most talented, and most incredibly humble group on campus. Starting again in 2018 after a short break, the new Midnight Blue brings a brand new sound!

Midnight Blue shares a passion for personal empowerment and expanding their musical horizons. They arrange all their own music, put on their own concerts, and foster a community of support that extends far beyond the rehearsal room. When they’re not rehearsing, you can probably catch them formulating ridiculous puns, going out for ice cream, or spending too much money at Pizza House!

It is with heavy hearts that we must announce that Midnight Blue will be dissolving for the 2024-2025 academic year. These past 6 years of joy and song have been unforgettable, and we hope to share our love of music with you all again in the future.

Best wishes,

Midnight Blue
