Drake On Kendrick Lamar’s ‘Control’ Verse: ‘I Lost A Little Bit Of Respect For The Sentiment’

Kendrick Lamar‘s “Control” verse had the entire rap game feeling some type of way as he name-dropped today’s hottest MCs from J. Cole to Mac Miller in a flurry of lyrical jabs. Out of those on the checklist, Drake has been the most vocal about his response.

“I didn’t really have anything to say about it. It just sounded like an ambitious thought to me,” Drake said in a recent interview with Billboard magazine.

“I know good and well that Kendrick’s not murdering me, at all, in any platform,” he continued. “So when that day presents itself, I guess we can revisit the topic.”

During Sunday night’s (Sept. 22) #CRWN interview with Elliott Wilson of RapRadar, Drizzy expanded on his reaction, even turning the tables when asked about Kendrick’s fiery 16.

“That [‘Control’] verse was a moment to talk about. Are you listening to it now, though?,” he asked, hushing all 850 attendees at NYU’s Skirball Center, including Wilson.

The 26-year-old kept the peace by praising Kendrick’s debut good kid, m.A.A.d city, even saying that the two met post-“Control” verse at the MTV Video Music Awards. “I saw him five days later at the VMAs and it was all love,” he recalled.

However, the Toronto rapper/singer admitted that his “Poetic Justice” collaborator should have come for blood.

“He didn’t come in there on some wild, ‘I’m in New York, fuck everybody.’ I almost wish he had come in there on that shit because I kind of lost a little bit of respect for the sentiment of the verse,” Drake said. “If it’s really ‘fuck everybody’ then it needs to be ‘fuck everybody’. It can’t just be halfway.”
