Angie Stone was born Angie Laverne Brown on December 18, 1961 in Columbia, South Carolina. She grew up in the church singing gospel before she formed Sequence at age 16. Stone, Cheryl “The Pearl” Cook, and Gwendolyn “Blondie” Chisolm became the first female rap group signed to Sugar Hill Records.
Their breakout single, “Funk You Up,” peaked at No. 15 on the Billboard US Top Black Singles chart. Under the guidance of Sylvia Robinson, they released other popular records including “Monster Jam” with rapper Spoonie Gee and “Funky Sound (Tear The Roof Off)” before disbanding in 1985—the year after she welcomed her daughter, Diamond, with ex-husband, Rodney “Lil Rodney C!” Stone.
Stone later became the lead vocalist of the trio, Vertical Hold, formed Devox with Lenny Kravitz’s cousin, Gerry DeVeaux, and worked as a songwriter and background vocalist on D’Angelo’s Brown Sugar and Voodoo. Around that time, she officially became a solo artist and released her debut solo album, Black Diamond in September 1999—the year after she welcomed her son, Michael Archer II, with D’Angelo.
In addition to releasing timeless hits such as “Wish I Didn’t Miss You,” “Brotha,” and “No More Rain (In This Cloud),” she sang the Girlfriends theme song, starred in Fighting Temptations, and made several TV/film appearances, including In The Cut, Saints & Sinners, Scary Movie V, One on One, School Gyrls, and Lincoln Heights.
The 3x Grammy nominee released her last album, Love Language, in May 2023. She is survived by her children and grandchildren.
VIBE sends our deepest condolences to the singer’s loved ones and all those affected by her passing.
