Ukraine requests four Allegro trains from Finland

Allegro trains used to run between Helsinki and St. Petersburg, until Finnish rail operator VR discontinued the service following Russia's invasion of Ukraine.

Ukraine has filed a request with Finland for the use of four Allegro trains.

The CEO of Ukraine's railway operator Ukrzaliznytsia, Oleksandr Kamyshin, met Prime Minister Sanna Marin (SDP) during her visit to Kyiv last week, Finnish news agency STT reported.

According to STT's sources, Finnish rail operator VR was informed of the request on Tuesday morning.

The Allegro train services ran between Helsinki and St. Petersburg from December 2010 until VR discontinued the line last March, just weeks after Russia's invasion of Ukraine.

Allegro trains are owned by Karelian Trains, a company which itself is co-owned by VR and the Russian railway firm RZD.

The rolling stock used on the line were Class sm6 electric multiple units made by Ahlstom.
